Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch Comparison

Both the Barista Touch and Barista Pro are capable espresso machines. Both can make great shots of espresso if dialed in properly by an experienced barista with the right training; we’ll talk more about how to do that later.

Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch – Both machines use dosing systems that require experience on part of the barista as well as some cleanup before steaming milk. As far as the “dosing” goes, you have to weigh each dose for every shot or measure it with a dosing tool from somewhere else (vacuum sealed canisters). The machines do not dose, grind and tamp the coffee for you.

The Barista Pro has easier operation due to it having more physical controls than the Barista Touch. It also only needs to be calibrated once through software after unboxing (it auto-calibrates when turned on), so there’s no need to calibrate every time you want to use it like with the Touch. Anyone who has played around with a Chemex knows that cleaning up ground coffee in between shots is kind of annoying; well both machines require similar cleanup after doing that AND tapping/touching two different spots on the screen (one for bean settings, one for grinder settings).

Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch – Neither machine has side controls like an iMac or GTD machine, so you have to reach over and touch a screen if you want to change something. There are physical controls for everything else though.

The Barista Pro is a better grinder than the Barista Touch through it being a more traditional crank type of grinder vs an electric motor with plastic grinding wheels. It’s also got a finer grind adjustment that allows you to further dial in your shots. The bean hopper on the Barista Pro can be swapped out for one that holds whole beans as well as ground coffee (“Espresso Pods” from Behmor), which isn’t possible on the Touch due to its dosing technology requiring an empty hopper at all times (more on this later).

I found that the Barista Pro is louder than the Touch, but also seems to require less cleaning overall.

Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch – The Barista Pro’s screen is lit up more brightly than the Touch’s display making it easier to read in darker environments. The display on the Barista Pro has a bit of lag, but most people won’t notice this unless they’ve had their hands on an iMac or Apple TV before.

Both machines are capable at pulling good shots of espresso if you know how to dial them in properly. Both have their quirks that take some getting used to – dialing in extraction using both machines will likely take longer than just learning how use an iMac machine for example. They’re also both extremely different from what I’m used to with Mazzer grinders and 1/3 throttle lever machines. But learning how to use both of them is extremely rewarding. The Barista Pro has an overall larger capacity, but the water tank on the Touch takes less time to refill.

The biggest difference between these two machines are their dosing systems.

Both machines require you to weigh out each dose for every shot, or measure each shot using a dosing tool from somewhere else (vacuum sealed canisters).   The reason why this is so different than any other espresso machine I’ve used is because it’s done through software – software that needs communication with your networked PC or Mac which runs the dosing calculator included in the box, so communication isn’t always 100%. Additionally, they’re not very consistent when it comes to grind in terms of weight consistency. There’s no “dialing in” the same shot twice using these machines like you can with traditional espresso grinders (e.g., Mazzer). Every machine is different too so each Barista Pro or Touch will extract differently even if calibrated properly.

Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch – The Barista Pro has two separate dosing chambers – one for fresh beans and another for ground coffee (“Espresso Pods”). This allows you to calibrate the left chamber (with fresh beans) easily then swap out pods without having to recalibrate after that (obviously keeping in mind that unused dose via pod still needs to be into the used dose bin; also pods need to be weighed on a scale if you want to get the most accurate dose possible). It’s also got a separate, larger hopper for whole beans. This is extremely useful in terms of making your morning coffee grind – no more changing out hoppers during your prep and reset.

The Touch has one dosing chamber that holds eight (8) doses into one fillable chamber using “Honeycomb Magik” technology (clever marketing term). I found this to be extremely annoying when it came to calibrating each shot; having an extra set of hands really helps since each time the machine is restarted or goes offline, calibration is required again which means measuring 8 individual doses with any sort consistency . It does allow you to make an entire pot of coffee (8 5oz cups) using the same grind setting, but you need to me asure each individual shot. I found it easiest to do this by grinding slightly less for each shot, measuring before tamping and adjusting as needed. The benefit over the Barista Pro is that only one hopper needs to be swapped out since both beans and ground coffee use the same chamber – just pour in your whole bean into that hopper then hook up a portafilter or Smart Tamper into that chamber. You can also calibrate your serving size per shot so you don’t have to always change out dosing chambers between shots if you’re making multiple drinks, though calibration does require opening up each chamber every time.

Pros Of Breville BES870XL

If you need a little more power and the ability to grind beans before you brew, there’s no better option than the Breville BES870XL.

Unlike most electric drip brewers, the Breville lets you adjust brew time—anywhere from 5 to 7 minutes—and strength—from mild to strong. And it has a built-in conical burr grinder that crushes coffee beans directly into the filter for maximum flavor extraction during brewing.

The machine also features an adjustable hot water dispenser with two separate settings: one for coffee (195°F to 205°F) and one specifically for tea (180°F), though we found this latter setting useful for heating up milk as well.

The Breville’s powerful boiler (heating element) delivers an initial blast of up to 1250 watts when you first turn the machine on, then turns itself down to normal coffee-brewing wattage (900 watts). The big difference between this heat capacity and that of machines like the Bonavita is that you can get hotter coffee at the beginning of each cup.

If you need your espresso quickly, it won’t be a problem with the Breville. This model delivered excellent espresso in 25 minutes, which was 15 minutes faster than other models we tested.

Powerful machine capable of intense extraction

Easily adjustable brew strength Hot water dispenser for tea or pre-warming cups Precision temperature control.

This is a machine designed for specialty coffee lovers for whom cost isn’t an issue. The BES870XL retails for $350, but that’s still less money than you’d spend on some superautomatic machines like the (Est. $500). And unlike the Breville’s smaller sibling, the (Est. $300), this version comes with grind-and-brew functionality built in; you don’t need to purchase it as a separate accessory kit, which pushes up the price further.

Breville Barista Pro vs Barista Touch – The Breville is also much more powerful than our other drip machines at brewing head pressure — 15 bar vs 8 bars — so it makes slightly stronger cups of coffee by default, though you can adjust its settings to deliver either normal or “extraction pressure” as the company calls it.

Tips To Use a Breville BES870XL

– Read The Instruction Manual Carefully

It seems like such a silly thing to put here as I would have thought there was no point reading a manual for a kitchen appliance. Well I was wrong, you never know what little piece of information might come in useful later down the line and knowing how to use your machine from the start will give you more confidence throughout the whole process!

Of course these tips aren’t limited to Breville espresso machines alone but can be applied to others as well.

– Know The Machine Inside And Out

Now this tip does include reading up on all those bits of information that may have been missed or not really understood during first read through. Know where every button is and feel comfortable reaching them without having to look just in case something goes wrong. Also, know which buttons work best with other features so you don’t waste any time during the preparation process.

– Read the Instructions For Your Espresso Beans Too

We can’t stress this one enough. You may have bought your favourite brand of coffee beans before, but if you’ve never used them in a machine like this before then they might need to be roasted differently or ground differently to get the most out of what your Breville BES870XL has to offer. The same goes for making your own espresso blends too! Our tip is to always check descriptions/instructions relating to how fresh ingredients should be stored and prepared as it could make all the difference between an average result and a great result!

– Learn How To Fix Any Common Issues

Read up on any problems you may find like leaks, clogged nozzles and other common faults. Being able to carry out basic maintenance yourself can save you money in the long run by avoiding costly trips to the service centre. There are lots of things that can be done at home with just a few tools which is why we’d suggest keeping them close at hand for when something does go wrong. The great thing about Breville espresso machines is that they don’t break down often but if they do then there are videos all over Youtube that show how to fix various problems easily! You’ll also find plenty of information online about things like what tools to use and how to clean your machine so you can get back up and running again in no time at all!

– Get Your Ratios Right To Maximise Taste And Texture

A lot of the time we’ll find that people don’t really know their ratios when it comes to making a great shot of espresso. Of course, the actual coffee beans themselves play an important part and once you start experimenting with different brands and blends then you’ll find your tastes changing depending on what’s available.

Our advice is to keep it nice and simple for now by sticking to basic shots. This means grinding about 18-20 grams of freshly ground coarsely ground coffee (medium grind is best) before adding it to your portafilter. Then add 18-20ml of fresh water into the top chamber only and then press the whole lot down with a tamper firmly enough to make sure it’s properly compacted before locking the portafilter in place and pressing the shoot button (when using an auto-filler or auto tamp, start this process after you’ve locked on the filter). Once that’s done, all you need to do is wait until your shot has been brewed and enjoy!

– Don’t Waste Any Coffee By Leaving It In The Machine For Too Long

As entertaining as watching coffee dribble out of a machine can be, we would advise against leaving any un-brewed shots inside for too long. This is because the machine will overheat which could eventually affect the quality of your next shot so it’s best to dump them instead!

The other reason is that coffee can absorb flavours from things like milk and this means you’re not getting the full flavour impact when you do finally drink it. Just remember that if you are going to leave a shot inside then take it out after around 20 seconds maximum as any longer than that might be too late for optimum results!

– Make Sure You Grind Your Coffee Fresh Every Time

Grinding beans at home before making espresso will always lead to much better results. The real key here lies in keeping your grinder clean though as anything left behind between batches can go stale quickly and negatively affect your end results.

Coffee should be ground as close to the time of extraction as possible to ensure maximum flavour and taste which is why we’d suggest grinding directly into a bowl after it’s been finely ground then pouring that into the portafilter ensuring that there’s no spillage! Then make sure you use those grinds within an hour or so; any longer than this and things will start becoming bitter!

– Don’t Always Believe That Expensive Coffee Is The Best Option

Great tasting coffee doesn’t always come from expensive beans (although it helps) but there are other ways to maximise quality without going over budget. For example, our friends at Expert Reviews have a great article on water filtration systems which could save you some serious pennies as it really does have a big impact on the taste of espresso!

In addition to this, there are plenty of ways to make your own coffee at home so if you want brands like Di Bella and Lavazza then look online as you might be able to find proper machines for less than they cost in shops. Of course, we’re getting away from the main topic slightly here but we’d also advise that you don’t use pre-ground beans if possible; always freshly grind right before brewing and enjoy your new results!
